Singer CG-590

1 thimble ratingRATING = 1 THIMBLE

When you think of Singer, you may think of classic sewing machines, however, there’s not much that could be called classic about the Singer CG-590 Commercial Grade sewing machine. It looks quite modern and comes with a host of features not seen on older Singer machines. This unit is fairly powerful and is designed for speed. It also has an automatic needle threader, 18 built-in stitches, adjustable stitch length and width, and a stainless steel bedplate. However the machine has its issues and those expecting a real “commercial grade” machine may be disappointed.

Consumer Ratings
The CG590 is rated at 3.7 stars on Amazon from some 294 consumer reviews. Reviews on the Singer website itself average about 3 stars out of approximately 20 reviews. These scores are not stellar. Other online retailers show similar mixed ratings.

Consumer Insights
Those who praise the machine love its speed, however, those same users are quick to note that the speed may be a bit too fast for a novice user. Owners also highlighted the following positive things about the Singer CG590:

PROS
– The fast speed is useful for commercial sewing or those who sew a lot.
– It is able to sew denim and other thicker fabrics.
– It runs quietly.
– It travels well and can easily be taken to classes or sewing groups.
– The automatic needle threader is a convenient time saver.
– The self-adjusting tension works well.
– The machine has a powerful motor.

Those who were less impressed with the machine posed the following issues/concerns:

CONS
– The bobbin winder doesn’t always wind the bobbins properly.
– The plastic pedal seems flimsy.
– The presser feet break easily.
– Singer support is not helpful with repairs.
– The user manual is difficult to understand.

Others mentioned that the CG590 does not look and feel like it will have the longevity that one might expect from a Singer machine (presumably an older Singer from days gone by). They were also not impressed by the user manual (you will find a link to it at the bottom of this review) or Singer’s customer support.

One of the issues reported by many owners is that the light bulb used to illuminate the sewing area is too dim. Some users also reported that the bulb burned out faster than they felt it should have. In addition, several folks who called Singer were told that replacing the bulb on their own voided the warranty because they opened the casing on their machine. Most users chose to setup lamps on their sewing tables to compensate.

Other problems reported by owners include the following:

– Several people reported that their machines were inoperative right out of the box. They went on to explain that Singer took weeks to send replacement parts. Some pointed out that their machines still did not work, even after receiving replacement parts. Also, the warranty ran out while waiting for their parts, making it impossible to return the machine. Other users highlighted that, when asking for assistance with fixing the machine, Singer required them to ship or transport the unit to an authorized repair facility at their own expense.

– Some owners seemed disappointed that this machine didn’t handle heavier fabric projects well. Although, those who gave it positive reviews stated that it sewed through multiple fabric layers with ease. We put this ability (sewing through thick fabrics) under the “Pros” as it was much more common to find owners who felt it performed admirably on thicker fabrics, even though a small number of people appear to have had issues.

One important thing to note is that Singer markets this model as “commercial” not “industrial.” Those interested in a machine that can handle industrial projects should consider another model. Also, the high speed of the CG-590 make it best suited for the experienced user. Beginning sewists may find a different model a better choice.

See the video below to learn more about how the Singer CG-590 operates.

CG-590 stitches

The CG590 comes with several accessories including 5 presser feet: all-purpose foot, special-purpose foot, blindstitch hem foot, buttonhole foot, and zipper foot. In addition, the machine comes with a pack of 6 needles, 4 class 66 bobbins, thread spool caps, large & small spool pin holders, an extra presser foot shank, a finger guard, a 52-inch foot control, a 73-inch power cord, and an instruction manual.

CG-590 Accessories

At about 16 pounds, the CG-590 can be easily transported to different venues. It has a built in carry handle which makes moving it from place to place easier and it is also cabinet mountable.

The CG590 comes with a 25-year limited warranty. However, consumers report that the warranty can be invalidated by simple actions, such as changing the light bulb. Singer support is also reported to be unreliable and take a long time to respond to complaints or questions. In addition, owners state that certified Singer repair facilities are not always easy to find, and shipment charges are not reimbursed by Singer.

Summary
The Singer CG590 Commercial Grade Sewing Machine is fast and typically adept at handling thick materials.  It is not too bad a machine for the price, provided that users understand its capabilities and purpose. There are better buys out there however.  Also, “Commercial Grade” may be a bit misleading and one should not consider this for extreme usage (industrial for example). Also, owners occasionally run into issues with the CG590 and report that Singer customer support is not particularly good.

Singer 2259 Tradition

3ThimblesRATING = 3 THIMBLES

The Singer 2259 Tradition model harkens back to the early days of Singer by maintaining a traditional layout, look, and feel.  It is also a fairly affordable model.  However, despite it’s reasonable cost, it incorporates several conveniences for the modern day sewing enthusiast.  This particular model is very easy to use and as such is an excellent machine for those who are undertaking basic sewing projects. It is also a good machine on which to learn the basics of sewing.  However, it is not well suited for sewing heavy duty fabrics or taking on more intensive projects.

Consumer Ratings
The 2259 Tradition has a 4.4 star rating (4.4 stars out of 5) on Amazon and there are over 500 reviews. It has also received many positive ratings and reviews on other websites, including Overstock and Sainsbury’s. There are a comparatively small number of negative reviews, and while the machine has a few issues, the majority of users feel that its low price is a clear indicator that it is primarily meant for small, simple projects.

Consumer Insights
Consumers agree that this model lives up to its name. It has a traditional look and feel, making it easy for experienced sewists to use with little or no learning curve.

A thorough review of comments revealed the following likes and dislikes:

PROS
– It is easy to thread.
– It is useful for small mending projects.
– The adjustable zigzag width and stitch length is very convenient.
– The light weight makes it easy to carry or store.
– Button holes are easy with this machine.
– The machine comes with a helpful DVD to get users started.

CONS
– Jamming and tangling of thread
– Poor manual

Although most users praised the machine, there was one issue that popped up on a number of occasions. That issue was jamming or tangling of the thread as a result of the thread not being wound evenly around the bobbin. However, several users mentioned that the problem can be easily avoided by guiding the thread with a fingernail during winding.

A number of owners also highlighted some problems with the manual. Most notable were these three:

1) Some users received only the Spanish version of the manual, but were able to later download the English version from the Internet.

2) Some users mentioned that the machine threading instructions in the manual were not clear, and that they had better luck asking experienced friends or family members to teach them how to thread the machine.

3) According to some, the manual explains how to use the machine in a fairly straightforward way, but doesn’t go into enough detail about maintenance.

Singer 2259 Stitches

Singer 2259 Tradition Stitches

There are a few things worth noting about the machine’s features.

The feed dog system and extra-high presser foot lifter are designed to allow for the sewing of thicker fabrics, but the machine is actually better suited to sewing thinner fabrics.

The drop feed doesn’t work in the traditional sense. The feed dogs do not actually drop. Instead, there is a darning plate that can be placed over them in order to prevent them from contacting the fabric. That provides the same functionality as a traditional drop feed.

The “multiple needle positions” is also not meant in the traditional sense. Some machines actually have needles that can be moved to the left or right. In the case of the 2259 Tradition, you cannot move the needle position on your own. Instead, there are a couple of stitch patterns that position the needle to the right for straight and straight stretch stitches.

The 2259 comes with a basic set of starter accessories including 4 presser feet: all-purpose, buttonhole, button sewing, and zipper. The feet are easy to swap out. A screwdriver, an edge/quilting guide, 2 spool caps, class 15 bobbins, a seam ripper/lint brush, a foot pedal, needles, a power cord, an instruction manual, and an instructional DVD round out the list.

The Singer 2259 Tradition weighs 13.6 pounds. It’s lightweight, simplistic design will allow beginners or those who like to sew on the go to have the flexibility to use it almost anywhere, including in sewing classes or groups.

Singer offers a 25-year limited warranty on the 2259 Tradition’s sewing machine head. There is a limited 5-year warranty on the motor, light assembly, wiring, switches, speed control, and electronic components. The machine’s adjustments, belts, rings, bulbs and attachments are covered by a limited 1-year warranty. You can read more about the Singer warranty information here.

Summary
The Singer 2259 is a great machine for those who sew as a hobby or want to try sewing for the first time. It can handle most basic at-home sewing projects with ease. It is portable, simple to use, and basic enough for anyone to learn on. In short, consumers agree that it is a good value for the price, and serves its purpose as a basic or starter sewing machine well.

Singer 4423 Heavy Duty

3ThimblesRATING = 3 THIMBLES

Singer is, of course, one of the biggest names in sewing machines. The Singer 4423 is designed to be one of the company’s speedier models. At up to 1,100 stitches per minute, it can help you make the most of your sewing time, but potential buyers should know that learning to control the speed can take more time than it saves at first. Despite its name, the 4423 is actually not too heavy, which makes it portable and easy to use in any location. The “Heavy Duty” portion of the name comes from the fact that it can sew thick fabrics, such as vinyl, denim, and canvas with ease.

Consumer Ratings
The 4423 has an overall rating of 4.4 stars across a total of 2,566 reviews on Amazon. It also has a 4.5-star rating on Overstock from 51 reviews, so owners like the machine for the most part. However, there are a significant number of consumers who experienced manufacturing defects upon arrival and also problems with Singer’s customer support.  These issues lead to several 1 and 2-star ratings from consumers on multiple retail websites.

Consumer Insights
Consumers who gave the 4423 rave reviews were quick to praise its ability to sew through several layers of thick fabric, such as denim and vinyl. Its speed is also a major benefit, according to users. Several owners also mentioned that they enjoyed the sleek design and low noise level of this model. Other positive comments include:

– It works well for sewing tough materials.
– It is a nice machine for beginners.
– It can be used for quilting.
– The needle is easy to thread.
– The broad base makes turning fabric easy.
– The manual is thorough and easy to understand.

Most consumers agree that this model is a great buy, but there are some exceptions. Approximately 10% of the 2,566 consumers who reviewed their machine on Amazon have had problems with this particular model breaking down soon after arrival. Most of those consumers also reported that Singer made them pay to ship the machines to the nearest repair centers. Several users also indicated that repaired or replacement models also broke down soon after arrival.

That being said, the majority of users feel that this model does work perfectly right out of the box, and that it works on a wide variety of projects. However, even the happiest users did tend to point out that the foot control is a bit sensitive. Therefore, controlling the speed of the 4423 can take a little getting used to.

Singer offers a 25-year limited warranty on the 4423. However, consumers report that it’s not always easy to find a nearby support center, and Singer requires the consumer to pay shipping charges in cases where shipping is required.

Summary

However, its features and accessories make it more suitable for home use, as opposed to commercial applications.
